Canine Urinary Incontinence

DogIs your dog having accidents in the house?  Have you noticed wet spots in your pet’s bed or perhaps on the carpet? Before your get angry and punish your pet, it is possible that she does not realize she is urinating and is suffering from urinary incontinence

“Urinary Incontinence” is a term that refers to the inability of the bladder to store urine. For normal storage of urine, the bladder wall relaxes to allow filling and the urethral sphincter closes tightly to prevent urine from leaking out. Urinary incontinence occurs when the urethral sphincter looses the ability to tighten, causing the urine to leak out. This is also known as sphincter incompetence.

This disorder can occur in both male and female dogs of any age or breed but occurs more commonly in spayed females. Obesity has also been associated with the problem.

Clinical signs that you may notice on your pet:

  • An unpleasant odor can develop
  • Dermatitis
  • Urine scalding
  • Infection around the urethra or vulva
  • Wet spots where your pet is sleeping

This leaking associated with urinary incontinence can be distressing to both you and your pet. It requires treatment not punishment. Treatment can include surgery, drugs, weight control or a combination of weight control and drugs.

Your veterinarian can help determine which treatment is best for your pet.  Don’t let urinary incontinence detract from your enjoyment of your dog. We Can Help! Contact Ark today.
